georgia rood

a movement based artist

a native of the greater atlanta, georgia area, georgia rood grew up surrounded by the arts and the woods. georgia began their early training in ballet at atlanta ballet at two years old. this eventually led them to studying at the georgia ballet conservatory, joffrey ballet school, terminus modern ballet theatre, and now the university of north carolina school of the arts where georgia is pursuing their bachelor of fine arts in contemporary dance.
always wanting to find more ways to explore and evolve, georgia is drawn to expression through dance, choreography, performance, and film. they have had the opportunity to perform works by josé limón, ashley lindsey, brenda daniels, darrell grand moultrie, ming-lung yang, and lauri worril-biggs. georgia has also created works for terminus modern ballet theatre students and unsca dancers in both film and dance. in addition to performing and creating dance works, georgia assisted brittany bailey in the setting of yvonne rainer’s “trio a” and the notation of the piece for that project. georgia takes inspiration from their childhood of dance and being immersed in nature when exploring their creative works and is currently collaborating as a see/a/change fellow at unsca.

i have always battled with defining my relationship with structure, with deciding if i can overcome its construction to appreciate its order. there is beauty in clear lines and staging, but also in chaos and chance. this piece became a cathartic way of exploring this relationship i have with structure, being able to build and develop formations then to take a step back and watch them dissolve. the dancers themselves step in and out of the piece, playing with what is performance and what is observation, presenting a challenge to the audience as the dancers weave an improvisational narrative in the space between the steps and their gaze.

how do you let go without giving

how do you let go without giving

the nameless project began at the beginning of 2023 and was first performed at the university of north carolina school of the arts. it is a continuing project based around georgia’s path of healing, an attempt to translate their own life and traumas. this first iteration, “how do you let go without giving”, was the product of the question “why do i continue to give to people who simply take?” georgia drew pictures of and wrote down more than a hundred memories from their childhood and growing up on colorful children’s craft paper, weaving them onto a forty foot tunnel of rainbow yarn. the audience was invited to walk through the tunnel with scissors and take what they would like to. georgia followed through last and acknowledged what was left behind, then cut away the whole structure. georgia is currently working on the second iteration, “it cannot last if it can’t be seen.”
